Vanity doesn’t age

In a recent conversation with an elder I was able to reflect back from the spoken words I was hearing, “It seems that vanity hasn’t aged along with you.” “Yes,” was the reply., “vanity tells me that I am ugly.”

Later in the day I became curious about this experience and how and when this shifted for me. When did I stop giving power to vanities harsh words of criticism spoken in my head? It wasn’t that long ago. I wondered what changed? Spontaneously I connected to the sense of self-love inside. I realized at some point the depth of self-love surpassed the value I placed upon vanities words in my head. The scale had tipped in self-loves favour and the criticisms of vanity don’t carry the weight they once did. This is a celebration. At some point in the practical application of my practice there has been a shift in the dialogue in my head and body. My heart speaks the loudest and demonstrates that self directed sense of love.

In my conversation with the elder I hoped my intonation came from this heartfelt experience so it had a soft landing. My intention – not to increase their own moral judgements.

What is your vanity telling you? Has your vanity criticism shown any acceptance of your aging?

The only way to change is action

Introducing the Cerebellum

Cerebellum is a Latin word that when translated into English it means little brain.  The circled part of brain pictured here is the Cerebellum.  It is located behind the brain stem just under the two lobes of the brain.

Early in my Feldenkrais training a video was shown of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais working with an infant who was borne without a Cerebellum.  Her name was Elizabeth.  Elizabeth’s parents had been told by numerous Doctors after her birth that she would never be able to learn, walk, talk or think.  Their predictions and recommendations were dismal.  In their first meeting Dr. Feldenkrais told Elizabeth’s parents that she was far more intelligent than her earlier Doctors had predicted.  As it turns out Elizabeth did grow up and attend University and had the ability to walk independently.  Thankfully her parents didn’t listen to all the earlier diagnoses and continued their pursuit of supporting their young child to reach her potential!

Why am I writing about the Cerebellum today?

This body part became a dominate focus of attention in meditation this morning.  While sitting I guide my focus of attention through my body parts for a sensory check in, especially if I feel agitated. My intention is to discover  where the agitation is located.  Having a strong Kinesthetic sense means that if one part of body function is agitated balance is off. This sitting and scanning pattern allows for awareness of what is out of balance and gives the opportunity to pause and observe the agitation.

Usually recognizing it without going into story or strategies is enough to clear it.  If not, this recognition cultivates awareness of how this imbalance may influence the days functional abilities giving more choices of how to respond versus reacting.

It’s important to increase understanding of the impact the Cerebellum has in our moment to moment living experiences.  It governs key functions such as speech, mood, fear and pleasure response, balance and posture, mental function, movement, motor learning, and vision.  It receives information  from other regions of the  brain and body to coordinate and control voluntary movements.  Recognizing the world events is influencing  my cerebellum gives me pause to consider that it will be a major influence in others current experiences as well.

The Cerebellum is known as the fear and anger center which communicates with the pre-frontal cortex.  Five tangible ways you can choose to increase the window of tolerance in the fear and stress responses of in the cerebellum region:

Balance Tip for falling fear when going down inclines

Are you fearful of falling going down stairs or an incline? This is the  number one  question at Renee’s Balance & A Fear of Falling Movement Series.

Her answer:

Drop your center of gravity

Try it.

  • Drop your center of gravity.  Can’t figure it out?  Bend your knees and let your butt drop down slightly.  Notice the difference in your feet.
  • Straighten up again and notice your body weight and posture
  • Now drop down and notice the difference.

Bending your knees and dropping your butt slightly is more grounding and can give one a sense of  solidness in their feet calming the fear center.

Desk Wealth Corner

by Renee Lindstrom, GCFP @ Inside Awareness

This desk corner is about abundance. Abundance in finances, investments, and resources.  For me it also represents abundance in the quality of experiencing life and relationships that includes the cycle of giving and receiving.  An example is the balance of giving and taking.    If wealth is from natural resources the question to consider is in the equal contribution back to restore and maintain balance and the quality of  nature and the environment.  In other words, is only taking and not  giving back?

3 Wealth Corner Tips:

  1. Declutter and open up space in this corner
  2. Add blue, purple, and red colours
  3. Add objects reflecting moving water such as fish (3), picture,  or fountain

Thank you for this gift, Renee
I can imagine ways to use it to help me stay focused on my healing.  There are so many parts to it (exercise, foods and supplements, braces, and other supports, mental attitude, etc) that I find it hard to remember it all every day.  I think your method will really help. Judy

I’ve REALLY enjoyed working with this tool so far!  I am using it to set “goals” for my own self. B

I have enjoyed the small piece of sharp focus.  B

In a blink of an eye your purpose can shift without your awareness of it!

I have a temporary house guest!  Her name is Kooks and I am wondering if changing her name to something calmer would restore calm and peace in my home!  She is my son’s cat who has arrived along with him while he gets enrolled in school and settled into a new job.

Having her has been a learning experience.  She is only a few years old and extremely active.   This is made worse by the fact that there is  a steady flow of deer, raccoons, squirrels, birds and flying things past our windows.  Having a park one house down also guarantees a steady parade of kids, dogs and people on various forms of transportation.  She is an indoor cat who is longing to be an outdoor one.  Oh did I mention the neighbor cat that is the size of a bull-dog!  Kooks is a small cat about the quarter of size of a fully grown cat that acts like she is the same size as the bull-dog cat.  It would not be a good match.

How do you think my focus of attention has shifted?  Well  I can tell you it’s gone from having no concern or care for a cat to a full-time focus.  She is curious and wants to know everything I am doing.  She is bored with her own company, doesn’t like to be alone  and expresses herself constantly.  She positions herself into being the “purpose” or focus of attention (intention) and when she’s not, she ensures you are aware of her, even at night.  She has brought many moments of affection, cuddles, playfulness and beauty as well so it’s hard to be annoyed at her.  However, her distraction to focus includes sleeping!  A night or two is manageable yet after a few nights the deficit affects waking hours and before you know it your drained and not able to support a healthy regime.  You slide.  At least I am noticing it for myself.  My solution is to wake up to what is happening and take my power back!  Yes unfortunately I am noticing how easy it is to lose your power to an animal and I am not referring to having a power animal.

It wasn’t my intention to have an animal after loosing my dog a few years back so I had not considered my agenda by have this one as a guest.  I have enjoyed her, yet in meeting her constant needs, I recognize that it has interfered with meeting my own.  Now it’s time to take steps to balance this out while she visits.

I now know first hand the value of asking oneself these questions:

  • Are you aware of how others and animals can influence where you focus your attention?
  • Did you know that your focus of attention is your ‘purpose” and can be shifted by a thought, feeling or interruption?
  • Are you aware when your focus of attention is hijacked away from your original intention?

If you answered no to the above questions, begin to notice this for yourself.

You may be at work focusing on a program you are developing and a peer walks into your office and doesn’t ask if you have a free moment and simply begins talking about their problem they are dealing with.  What happens to your concentration?

It may be at home while trying to get dinner on and your teen comes in to tell you how you ruined their day without asking you if you have a free moment first beforehand.  What’s your reaction?

The good news is that you too can learn to be aware of these distractions to your focus of attention without getting sucked down into the drain of irritability, frustration and annoyance and having the only option of reaction!

Connect to find out more about how to shift to action of understanding your focus and how to keep it with less reaction.  Consider empathy coaching or training.
