Creating Bamboo Forest in Landscape!

by  Renee Lindstrom, GCFP

Before & After Harvesting

Along the fence running the length of the back of the property  bamboo has been planted.  This fence has a busy sidewalk and roadway behind it and the bamboo provides privacy and protection now that it has grown.  This summer the bamboo has become tall enough that the stalks are ‘living art.’

Harvesting this bamboo has transformed this grass from an overgrown and overwhelming  state into a calm bamboo forest!  This space is becoming more balanced and comfortable.  The openness also represents letting new energy into the life areas that run along the fence:  wealth, fame and relationships!

The element that dominates these three life areas is the element of fire.  Bamboo represents the element of wood which is supportive of fire.  It is also the strongest wood on the planet that represents longevity.  It is a good plant to support health, wealth and happiness in these three life areas!

Where is your relationships corner?

Imagine a nine square grid overlaying your property.  Three rows of three, equal in size.  Now stand on the street facing your property.  The relationship corner is the last square to the right in the farthest row of three.  Now walk back into your garden as though for the first time and observe this area and what story it may share.

Consider a consult with me, in person, face-time or by phone!

Fun & Cheap Gardening Ideas!

Relationship Corner 2016-05-29 14.37.35When it came to fixing up our relationship corner we didn’t have a plan until at the beach gathering Nootka Rose petals.  It’s where we noticed some beautiful rounded bark with red lines.  Gathering this bark along with some different driftwood pieces a great corner emerged!  What was the cost?  Our own effort. and $20.00 for sand, #20.00 for gravel and #20.00 for compost!

Which pathway draw you in and peeks your curiosity?

Both these pictures are taken in South Oak Bay in Greater Victoria.

One of these pathways defines harmonious chi and other chi out of balance that is called “*sha chi.”

*Sha chi is considered to have an influence like a secret arrow and in Chinese Philosophy one would consider shifting it into a more harmonious experience.

How would you describe the pathway to your front door?

Magic Squares

Another Legend similar to the I Ching origins is one where Fu-hsi was meditating by the River Lo, when a tortoise or a turtle emerged. He studied the markings on its shell, which revealed pattern on it’s back.  One with nine squares having marking inside each one.  The markings in each square that when added in a row of three in any direction equaled 15.

Bagua - Magic Squares

The Lo Shu square  is viewed as a harmonious blend of  9 archetypal principles of numbers and a cosmological plan of time and space that reflects the order of the universe. Such importance was laid on this configuration, that it was used as the ground plan for the nine palaces of the Emperor. As the intermediary between heaven and earth, he mirrored this cosmic plan by living and circulating around these palaces during the year. The plan was extended to the design of the capital city itself, with Old Peking at the centre and having eight avenues of access – symbolically the centre of the Middle Kingdom of the world. Today the square plays an intrinsic part in the geomantic art of Feng Shui.

8 Trigrams & 64 Hexigrams became a discovery of something implicit in the cosmic order

YinYangThese 8 trigrams are the building blocks of 64 hexagrams that display every possible combination of these lines. It was the first of these sequences that led the 17th century father of calculus, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz to discover the functioning of the binary system. A Jesuit priest, who was based in China, showed the configuration to Leibniz, who investigated further and discovered that if the value of 0 were attributed to each solid line, and the value of 1 to each broken line, it would give the binary notation for the numbers 0 through to 63. The uncovering of the binary code allowed Leibniz to change the path of mathematics for all time.  The I Ching is therefore the earliest known example of binary notation, this being the smallest complete arithmetic number system as well as the language that enables computers to work.

In Chinese divination philosophy, the tortoise is the foundation of  the cycle of creation – birth, life, death and rebirth

Legends share  that around 3000 BC, the Emperor Fu-hsi (Fu-xi) was meditating by the Yellow River, when a tortoise emerged from the water and the markings on its shell revealed to him the 8 trigrams of the I Ching.

I Ching (Yi Jing) – The Book of Changes – ancient divining system and oldest book in the world

In the Chinese Cardinal Directions symbology the tortoise protects ones back.  It can also symbolize a shield.  In Roman times warriors marching with shields up coming up from behind slowly is a reflection of a turtle’s shell!

8 Trigrams

These  8 trigrams became a more sophisticated system with 64 hexagrams.  In 1143 BC King Wen organised these hexagrams into a system and commentary  creating the structure of the I Ching that we know today.

Around 1000 BC yarrow stalks replaced  the tortoises and in 500 BC Confucius is said  to have added commentaries to the I Ching.

The I Ching  is considered to be a philosophical system based on higher mathematics. It utilises strong / solid lines that are considered to be yang, and yielding / broken lines that are considered to be yin. These lines are combined into groups of 3, which give us the trigrams that symbolically represent:

Upper line – Heaven

Middle line – Humanity

Lower line – Earth
