Communication retraining the brain

In Cultivating Awareness foundational for experiential learning one will read about the similarities and differences between Renee’s educational programs and a Mindfulness Mediation Practice.

The focus of this article is on cultivating awareness to retrain the brain and balance used of left and right sides of the brain that Renee encourages her students to learn in the process of becoming self-directed and connected to what and how they are speaking.

The importance of a particular practice of identifying types of  thoughts became relevant when a student came back to class and shared their life changing self-awareness experience.  They discovered that they compare themselves and others while making critical moral judgments based upon their filter of jealousy. By slowing down to observe these patterns, this recognition can shift and transform their experience. The types of thoughts we address are in the following illustration.

In this diagram a maze is in the area of the fore-brain that depicts the essence of figuring it out and hitting walls until one finds their way forward. This can be complex and draining process.

In the following diagram a larger spiral leading directly into the center point is shown in the fore-brain area that demonstrates the ease in which cultivated awareness through communication can mirror.  This cultivation is not unlike the growing ability to focus ones attention as they would in a sitting mediation.  It is a different focus, pattern and foundation that one would practice that would include more of ones whole functional ability than the limiting thought process shown in the above diagram.

Cultivating Awareness foundational for retraining the brain

Each of the these experiential learning opportunities share the same objectives of  cultivating awareness and focusing attention.

Another thing in common they have is that they are inclusive of the four aspects of the human condition and function:  mental, emotional, physical and belief systems.  These components are not isolated as separate functions as in other wellness styles.  In each of these functional events there is an education aspect that includes a mindful pattern cultivating expanded focus.

Here is a way of cultivating awareness through a pattern one may be familiar with:

Mindfulness Meditation

Change through Cultivating Awareness
  • 3 Steps to Mindful Meditation to Cultivate Awareness

Step #1 – Begins with a foundation

Mat, Cushion, Posture

Step #2 – Then a focus point

Breath

#3 – Followed by a pattern

Observe your thoughts & environment while following your breath

Improving the ability to notice, discover new connections, refine self-use, and integrate your new skills through the experiential learning techniques anyone can integrate the skills and action steps that creates a ‘being in the moment experience‘ like in a dedicated  meditative practice.

Pegasus Consciousness Infusion

In meditation an unfamiliar word and image came into the mindful state I was experiencing. The word was ‘Pegasus’ and the vision of  it was in a peaceful atmosphere, not stormy.

Later I looked up the the symbolic meaning of Pegasus and enjoyed reading that Pegasus represents an aspect of what I have been sharing in my teachings for the past decade! Pegasus represents our Hippocampus, the place of memory.  It is the point in our brain which I focus in on by using empathy to transform reactions of survival: fight, flight or fright with calmer states to process emotions and go to the root source of what is causing the reaction. When this happens we remember who we are and where we are going – mindfulness (what is meaningful to us replacing the reaction).  For me this is how we can access our higher self by being able to understand our internal reaction and respond with this conscious awareness versus an automatic reaction that creates separation.

In one write up I read that Pegasus represents communication that transforms evil!  I have enjoyed reading the historical interpretations of Pegasus and coming away with an opinion that it may reflect a new consciousness for many of us.  A consciousness that includes the skill set of meditation in motion (not sitting) to better understand how to transform our own inner agitation that inflicts violence on ourselves and others.  A consciousness that is an infusion of the art of conversation and strong independent support through our greatest support system – our skeleton!

Receiving this new information during the eclipse leaves me hopeful and I feel inspired and more grounded as a mentor in the arts I contribute to the planet! How I would describe the Pegasus consciousness weaved into my practice is that it is the infusion of flexible patterns of movement, process of communicating and environmental influences experienced in the quality of one’s reality.   It is the ease and comfort in one’s interactions, mobility and surroundings.  Each separate focus of my practice is a calming influence on one’s hippocampus (Pegasus)  for settling fight, flight or fright reactions.  Infused it becomes a greater experience.

Receiving the pain of humanity one conversation at a time!

Listening Spiral Inward

Listening Spiral Inward

Last night I was asked about the emotion in my eyes in an empathy coaching session the previous day.  I couldn’t remember the specific incident, however, I knew the depth of caring alive in me from witnessing the results of some very destructive communication and manipulative behaviour to get ones needs met at any cost.

It brought back a memory of being in an empathy healing session with  Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, author and creator of Nonviolent Communication.  As our session deepened I observed a pool of pain in his eyes that could only be a result of his pain for humanity. In Buddhist teaching this eye contact was much different.  The reflection in Buddhist Rinpoches that I have experienced are compassionate without the depth of pain Marshall’s had.

Considering this, I am comparing that Marshall’s empathy program is unencumbered and simple.  It takes one inward towards the root cause of the experience and to one’s integrity while the Buddhist practice and talks are based upon;  learning mindful meditation, spiritual dogma, faith, devotion  and  a focus on examples using storytelling of the past to pass knowledge and discernment on. I have found with Marshall’s integration you can focus your attention and go to the center, while in Buddhism integration isn’t so direct.  I believe all Rinpoches have compassion and  I know their devotion to humanity is tremendous.  Each day they give reverence to those who crossed their path that day before retiring.

From this above personal experience I believe empathy is intimate, vulnerable, connected to the immediate experience and identifies the individual needs while compassion is  a fuller experience and not directly  connected to the immediate needs.  I experience empathy to lead to compassion.

Public Service Announcement: If someone is suicidal don’t fix, listen!

Some days a Feldenkrais® Session will become a talking session depending upon the need in the moment.  Recently a student came in experiencing trouble with their shins, calves, knees and ankles.  As these physical areas began to free up, this parent began sharing their concerns for one of their adult children’s depression.  The adult child had bouts of serious depression and this time was fearful themselves that they would cause damage to themselves.

Generally I simply listen.  This time  hearing only strategies to make it better,  I thought about this adult child’s needs that were not being considered or even identified and spoke up.  I suggested to this parent that perhaps this adult child simply needed to be listened to.  No strategies, no fixing, no story telling.  I suggested that perhaps they needed someone to  be willing to be uncomfortable in their discomfort and be able to sit in this quagmire with them.  Someone in this much pain has a need for safety and to be fully accepted as they are in the moment.  Someone this agitated needs to find an anchor, someone who will just be there.

I coached them on how to listen with empathy and heard back they got the value in this.  They too had a time in their life where they didn’t get their needs met for being seen and heard!

We continued with our movement exploration and found that the areas affected became increasingly more flexible with this deeper understanding and acceptance.  This parent needed support too for their needs of safety!

Empathy Mirror

Empathy is an elixir.  It has not been abundant in our culture. Empathy calms one and reconnects them to their own value.  When someone is not able to value themselves, others can provide them with reassurance that they matter by being mirrors reflecting back acceptance, love and appreciation using basic listening skills!

Renee’s own father committed suicide after a long struggle of not getting his needs to be valued met.  A man who was sensitive to the illusive communication that wasn’t being spoken and troubled by the dishonesty in what he was hearing, over time became isolated.  During his darkest hour his wife, children and family ignored his pain and suffering.  He longed for solitude and by pushing everyone away to gain it, realized his biggest fear – being alone.  He turned to Renee who tried to find a hero for him however none came forward, rather they withdrew.  Overwhelmed and 1/2 province away he lost his battle.
