Somatic behaviour focus can redirect attention away from labels, being diagnosed & judged Such as word addictions with too many analytical definitions & moral judgements

I do not often use the word addictions. Only recently have I used it in my posts. I don’t let it influence my personal or group lessons. It is such a distracting word with so many changing definitions and a word that is normally very personal to the person speaking it into life, or listening to someone else speaking it to life. What I focus on is the instinct that turns one towards an addictive quality. For me the instinct is triggered by survival. An easy example is sex.  Sex is a basic need in the base level of needs along with water, food, shelter, air. If someone is operating under anxiety, stress, fear, or anger emotions it will trigger an instinctual reaction. In this example it would be self soothing through basic intercourse without much meaning, other than relief.  However, the urge in the gut is often still there during and after. If one increases sleep patterns, eats healthy, and starts to experience self fulfilling needs being met, including meaningful relationships, the instinctual need to self sooth shifts as the survival instinct diminishes. This doesn’t mean one loses their sex drive, it just shifts it into more meaningful interactions. This self soothing example can be replaced with the actions of gambling, drinking, drugs, smoking, food, etc. Often the focus is on the label – addiction, which can shift the mind focus to the past behaviour, memories, or blaming and shaming self and others. If one can capture the moment, there is a felt sense of the instinct that is felt prior to going into the habit of reacting to it. This is a moment to observe what just happened. (Something is happening in the moment of the trigger.)  This can be the point of change. Notice the trigger and instead of going into the strategy for self soothing, one can process the trigger and create inner balance. This is an important skill development.  Leaving it unchecked creates a type of random chaos either by oneself, or others who have clued in on how to keep one in the agitated state. (Yes, common strategy for others is to redirect someoneโ€™s focus of attention to get their own needs met).  The person who introduced this to me, Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D., used an example of eating. Often when people become uncomfortable, they will reach for food. He would suggest the person reaching for food to stop and ask themselves if they are hungry, or if something else was instead gnawing at them. Usually, they are not hungry, and this pause to check in is enough to shift the experience to talking about whatever it is that instigated the action of reaching for food. It could be as simple as being asked an uncomfortable question. The trigger is inner conflict. If you disagree with someone, it can cause inner conflict. If you hear a hard to hear message, it can create inner conflict. If someone tries to control you it can cause inner conflict. etc., etc.

How to set intentions for a Crystal shopping list

If you are a beginner to using Crystals the best steps to take before even going into the gem shop, going online or attending a trade show is to determine what your needs are.

First Step

The first question to ask yourself is:

  • What purpose do I have for obtaining crystals? Is it for healing, meditation, goal setting, focus, home decor, making jewelry, and for creativity, etc.?

The second question to ask yourself is:

  • What area of life to I want to enhance with the crystals benefits? Is is health and wellbeing, career, study and education, relationships, and goal setting, etc.?

The third questions to ask yourself is:

What benefits or qualities am I longing for? For example:

Click pic to see more crystals and qualities

These three questions identify your intention. Crystals are a way to focus attention using an intention to manifest. One of the biggest time wasters is going into a store or show without a connection to your purpose for getting a crystal. Not only at the show, but for the next period of time of not knowing what to do with it or how to display it that could last for years. Be prepared for success in exploring crystals knowing your intention.

Second Step

Once you identify the qualities your are seeking by answering the above questions, including naming the life area you long to enhance with them, the exploration then becomes what crystals speak to those qualities, or your needs. This would be when you can feel more prepared to go into a shop, online or trade show to search out what crystals or stones would fulfill your needs. However don’t forget the important 3rd step!

The Third Step

The third step is to look around the space you would like to place the crystal or stone in. How much space do you have? What will you display it on? Will it be in a showcase position or in a bowl with other stones. If for healing is there a dedicated space. Is it for your office desk or nearby, etc.?

To save future clutter and finances prepare yourself by connecting to your intention. Crystals and stones languish in cupboards and on shelves gathering dust in unattractive arrangements as some buyers didn’t start out with a connection to what purpose it would fulfill for them. It was attractive, or sounded good, and an impulse buy. In mentoring or coaching, Renee has experienced many people who have bought crystals impulsively and then forgotten them on the shelf or in storage. Crystals are alive with qualities and meant to be used. The more they are used the brighter and more beautiful they are. Those forgotten ones become lackluster and dusty. As crystals are accelerator’s they absorb their surroundings, as people do, and emanate the energies back out the same as people do.

Changing starting position in posture transitions

In Awareness through movement group lessons Renee will change the starting point position for guiding similar patterns of movement.. For example, a pattern of movement in standing can also be reflected in a sitting or a prone position. Some patterns in a prone position can be experienced while facing upward or facing downward. During this recent past fall and winter her focus has been on exploring the flexibility in the pelvic, sacrum and hip joint connections in more in-depth. She has seen a trend in younger and younger people with serious lower back, pelvic, hip, knee and ankle complaint’s. This includes joint replacements. It seems to be a rapidly increasing solution. Hence her own personal focus on using a sling for the potential of increasing her own flexibility through her spine ribs and limbs as it responds to leg positions in postural transitions. Any increased agility as a result will increase the available sensory awareness of skeletal movement patterns in transitions.

No she is not going to bring slings into her classes. At least not in the near future! She will use the increased sensations of the weight shifting through the skeleton into her Functional Integration and Awareness through movement guided patterns.

If you’re needing support with improving. or increasing your range of movement try group lessons or personal functional integrations lessons.

Acupressure Mat

I began lying on an acupressure mat and 1/2 bolster in late Dec ’23, for 20 minutes a day.โ€‚Not for the faint hearted!โ€‚When first laying down the sharp points are surprising and can be temporarily painful.โ€‚However within minutes my back softened and the points no longer caused discomfort.โ€‚The only time the points caused any temporary uncomfortable moments when lying on them was when shifting my weight.โ€‚For example, bending my knees and standing my feet to put more pressure into the small of my back.โ€‚I also raised my lower back and began putting bolster under neath for more pressure into shoulder blades and lower back.โ€‚This mat is long enough to target the length of my spine beginning at the top of my shoulder blades and down to the bottom of my sacrum.โ€‚With the 1/2 bolster I can apply the points to my neck.โ€‚

I began to use this acupressure mat to test it for softening the muscles along my vertebrae from my neck down through my sacrum.โ€‚As a Feldenkraisยฎ Practitioner (since 2007) I am all too well aware of the common restrictions causing limited mobility through contraction of the muscles and soft tissue along the spine, ribs and into the pelvis.โ€‚This restricts flexibility and limberness. that ultimately can cause injury and pain.โ€‚What I wasn’t expecting was the increase in blood circulation when lying down on these points.โ€‚It was immediate and the whole area warmed up.โ€‚I quickly recognized the value in warming the organs up as well in these areas.โ€‚Read more below on the benefits I have noticed in just a few days.

Noticeable benefits of lying on acupressure mat in a few short days

  • Release of TMJ joints inn lower jaw with angling the 1/2 roller.โ€‚This was unexpected and increased the benefits for me.โ€‚I hold tension in my TMJ joints naturally and I could feel them let go and my jaw drop.โ€‚Due to TMJ stress myself I have taught a workshop since 2007 on how to shift habitual patterns through the facial muscles, neck and shoulder muscles toโ€‚lengthen and tonify them to increase the flexibility of the jaw.โ€‚Feeling this deeper release was tremendously rewarding to experience.โ€‚If for only this benefit I would recommend lying on an acupressure mat!โ€‚Upcoming TMJ workshop in March ’24
  • Increase in vitality the first day after lying on the mat for 20 minutes.โ€‚There was an inner vitality that emerged motivating more activity throughout the day.โ€‚Luckily I have chosen the morning to test it out.
  • I have noticed a deeper quality in my sleep even through I have chosen to lay on the mat in the morning.โ€‚The articles I have read mention an increase in sleep when lying on it at night.โ€‚I am too active right to bed time to lay on it at this time, yet still seem to have the same benefits.โ€‚
  • Each additional day I lay on the mat for twenty minutes I am noticing more benefits not immediately experienced.โ€‚After a few days I began to notice a softening in my arm and leg muscles even though they are not on the mat.โ€‚It seems to be coming from the ribs and vertebrae release.โ€‚My fingers are more flexible and soft.โ€‚The tightness around the bone has dissolved even through I haven’t actively focused upon functional movement patterns with them during this time.โ€‚
  • Today I experienced increased points of energy release along my lower back, beginning in my sacrum.โ€‚At the base of my sacram I sensed a release, a pulsation and warmth that immediately increased sensation in my lower extremities.โ€‚I likened it to a release ofโ€‚a tight muscles or constriction blocking the energy in this region of the spine.โ€‚
  • Generally overall I am experiencing a softening of tension through my whole body with increased sense of relaxation and wellbeing.โ€‚

For all these benefits I am experiencing I would recommend trying an accupressure mat.โ€‚Yes it may be uncomfortable for the first few days, however, that quickly disappears and the benefits outweigh the initial discomfort.โ€‚

Appreciating beautiful endorsement for fuller focus on functional healing integration

M Cโ€™s endorsement of Renee Lindstromโ€™s Inside Awareness Method of Self Mastery and Creative Living.

I was well into an active, happy and productive retirement from my university teaching and research career, when I fell and fractured my left upper arm. Although the bone healed well and I had a course of rehabilitative physiotherapy and then osteopathy treatments, I continued to have pain and decreased mobility in my shoulder and arm. It was this lingering problem that eventually took me to Renee Lindstrom. Now more than a year later, Iโ€™m swimming again, quite comfortably. More than finding relief from that accidentโ€™s effects, I have learned from Renee to reconsider my body and to become aware of how its functioning is integral to how I live in, confront and respond to the world.

At age 86, I have until recently been blessed by good health, such that I could more or less ignore my body. It seemed to work for me until the past year when I was diagnosed with cancer and had to have a course of chemotherapy. I felt that my body had let me down when I was unable to continue blithely living the life that I wanted to, without attentiveness. This is when Reneeโ€™s work with me based on her special knowledge, experience and practical and interpersonal skills really made the difference. With quiet confidence and patience, she is coaching me to participate successfully, at my advancing age, in taking the steps that bring me back into the possibilities that are available to me now. Iโ€™m finding this learning process, among other things, a very interesting, enabling and captivating โ€œprojectโ€.

Vanity doesn’t age

In a recent conversation with an elder I was able to reflect back from the spoken words I was hearing, “It seems that vanity hasn’t aged along with you.” “Yes,” was the reply., “vanity tells me that I am ugly.”

Later in the day I became curious about this experience and how and when this shifted for me. When did I stop giving power to vanities harsh words of criticism spoken in my head? It wasn’t that long ago. I wondered what changed? Spontaneously I connected to the sense of self-love inside. I realized at some point the depth of self-love surpassed the value I placed upon vanities words in my head. The scale had tipped in self-loves favour and the criticisms of vanity don’t carry the weight they once did. This is a celebration. At some point in the practical application of my practice there has been a shift in the dialogue in my head and body. My heart speaks the loudest and demonstrates that self directed sense of love.

In my conversation with the elder I hoped my intonation came from this heartfelt experience so it had a soft landing. My intention – not to increase their own moral judgements.

What is your vanity telling you? Has your vanity criticism shown any acceptance of your aging?
