Is it time to hit the re-set button and delve deeper into the causes rather than teaching solutions?

BrainAt the end of an Awareness through Movement® lesson, designed for  participants to begin to notice their movement patterns and experience a stronger sense of   their body movements, one student shared a story.   She had been told by a new, young orthopedic doctor that their was nothing more she could do her frozen shoulder except surgery.   She went on to say he told her, “Don’t waste your money on any more physical therapy or anything, surgery is the only cure.”

Curious I asked what part of her shoulder would be operated on.  She was unable to tell me. I told her that knowing more about what was wrong and what would be fixed is part of the brains healing process.

I asked her if I could take a look at her arm and shoulder.  Agreeing to this she let me take a look and I discovered that it was far more expansive than her shoulder.  As soon as I picked up her arm she mentioned that her wrist and elbow hurt  from the computer mouse.  In her mind a shoulder operation will fix this as well.

I suggested to her that it would be a good idea to continue with some type of therapy as in my opinion the cause was much broader than what a simple operation could cover.  An operation is not going to teach her how to use and integrate her full range of motion and movement ability.

We have been collectively lulled into a false sense that others know what’s best for us without questioning and exploring what we can do differently.  This gal told me that she spent years with the phone up to her ear lifted by this shoulder.  That is the pattern I felt in her upper quadrant that includes clavicle, underarm, upper back, shoulder-blade and upper arm.  Her operation cannot include these areas nor does it change the habit she has developed.  The only way she can change her habit is by learning to do something different and an operation alone will not offer this training.  New patterns of movement must be introduced to her brain in an aware state.  It isn’t something that can be done to her while her mind is off somewhere else.    Have you read The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity by Norman Doidge yet?

Turning an abusive & disgusting appointment into lemonade!

The Shocking Practitioner & Novelty Store

blue-1998608_960_720

Sometime last August  I was asked if I would like to go to an iridologist.  I hesitated as I have learned to not compare the work I do, with what others are doing in the community.   However, uncharacteristically I said okay.  The gal that was passing her appointment on to me gave me instructions of how I would have to fill out forms once going to the customer service at this local #yyj storefront.

On arrival at the customer service desk of this local store I am immediately brushed aside once I announced myself .  The gal tells a clerk to put me in the new massage chair.  I sat down and found out this clerk didn’t know how to use the chair which was unlike any massage chair I had ever seen.  The clerk left and I found myself in a chair that was manipulating my movement patterns in a way that could cause injury while squeezing my limbs tighter and tighter without stopping!  I was desperately trying to stop the machine when the practitioner came up to me and expressed impatience and annoyance.  Luckily I found out that it had to do with her taking another client ahead of me without an appointment so that I didn’t take it personally.  That is to begin with until it went from bad to worse.

At no time did she share what she was doing in her appointment, however demanded, in a chastising  way, personal information about me that I was uncertain had anything to do with why I came.  Walking into her office I was dumbfounded.  A massage table was put into an alcove under the stairway and lowered to sit on across from a broken office chair that I was expected to sit on. The floor was covered in old worn out shoes scattered around so that I had nowhere to put my feet.  She only had a small space to sit on the table cross-legged style across from me and there were no windows or vents.  When she was giving me some papers, that the customer service desk neglected to give me ahead of time, to fill in she began yelling about my lack of being committed.  I was in shock.

She decided there wasn’t time to fill in the papers and began looking at my eyes and making personal statements based upon my iris’ while wanting confirmation of her accuracy.  There was no way I would be telling this gal anything personal or being vulnerable with her.  At no time did I experience any empathy, kindness, respect or consideration.  I had not been to a practitioner like this in over 20 years!!!!!  It was awkward.  After viewing my eyes she hooked me up to a vega machine.  She made it sound outer worldly and thankfully I knew what it was  from having my own naturopathic and homeopathic doctors.   I looked in dismay as the rods poking into me as they did not look as though they had been cleaned between clients.

As she talked at me and not with me, she began talking to me about worst case scenario’s with a focus on candida.  She emphasized multiple homeopathic remedies that I would need.  Well over $200.00 worth!  I was thankful that my first Homeopathic Doctor was Stephan Malthouse and that I had his compassionate care experience prior to seeing this person.  To go along with her diagnosis I received a photocopied paper with a few food items ticked off that she claimed was all I could eat if I wanted to detox.  It had obviously been from a paper copied many times before without any research, meal/daily diet suggestions or recipes ideas.  This food list was based upon the vega machine readings and it interfered completely with an organic lifestyle change that was personally happening for me from my own garden food source.  Trying to have a conversation with her regarding this she labelled me argumentative and was unable to discuss this.  She determined I wasn’t interested in healing!

At some point she learned I was a practitioner so she cut our hour appointment to 30 minutes and hovered over me as I went to the counter to turn in the papers, etc.  She grabbed the clipboard I was using away from me and took the pen out of my fingers.  It was the appointment from hell!

Getting back to my office and processing this experience in walked one of my more fragile clients.  She had just been in to see this person and was experiencing trauma.  I was thankful I had gone after all and immediately reminded my client of her own naturopathic doctor  that does candida testing and was an iridologist.  She calmed down and I suggested she make an appointment and get a second opinion.  She did and reported back a much different outcome with a different diagnosis.  She also suggested it was a far more professional experience without the need for so many remedy purchases.

Had I not had Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication Training, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrias’ Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement Training and  Dyan Grant Francis’  Art of Placement/ Eco-psychology Training , I could have fallen victim to this practitioner’s snake oil like sales technique.  Fill them with fear and keep them in the dark.    This was an abusive and disgusting experience that I was able to turn into lemonade!  The material that she offered me is not current and was a trending  topic in our community over 20 years ago.  She does not live in Victoria and helicopters in while there are practitioners here locally that have integrated these techniques into their own practice.  They are far more professional with an office set up for comfortable appointments.   I caution anyone who is seeking answers to consider that manner in which they are treated and recommend that you work with those that are meeting your needs for respect.  I did receive a flyer shortly after this appointment that advertised this practitioner as a mindful awareness instructor and grief coach.  I was surprised and felt sad as my experience didn’t align with these two offerings.

Vitamins, Supplements, Medicinal’s & Food Sources in the yard!

In the late winter of 2016 I committed to take gardening to the next level.  I researched the properties of the weeds, plants and trees growing freely in my yard and on my block.  Since this commitment I have dried many types of leaves, stems, stalks, roots and flowers.  From these resources I have made plant infused oils, tinctures and tea mixes and from the oils; salves, creams and soaps.

Woman's Moon Tea

Woman’s Moon Flower Tea

Less than a year later I realized after a mullein leaf infused bath that I had used mullein oil in my hair , a mullein infused soap and  mullein oil on my skin.  As mullein is safe to ingest, I had drunk mullein tea before bathing!  One of the benefits I have discovered about mullein this year is its properties for soothing muscles and softening dense skin tissue.  It felt heavenly.  It is a completely differently feeling to have natural products on my skin that has grown in my garden and created in my kitchen.  I am discovering that the feeling is a sensual quality. What is missing is the chemical feeling of store-bought creams and conditioners!  Using homegrown and homemade recipes is now an experience to personally differentiate the differences of the two.

Bamboo in Renee's garden

Indocalamus Longiauritu Bamboo in Renee’s garden

This week the focus was on the bamboo my son and I planted four years ago. One of my favorite plants. I enjoy its appearance, its sound in the garden and that it contributes to cleaning our oxygen!  It is a sustainable and renewable resource.

I am astounded by the fact that bamboo has 10 times the amount of silica than horsetail and that I can pick new leaves to make my tea.  I love going into the garden to pick leaves and not spend money at the store to buy silica  based products!

Searching on-line for bamboo tea leaves and toxicity, I have found only benefits to humans and not found any reference to toxicity in tea leaves for humans. However there are references for it being dangerous to some animals.  If you have bamboo growing in your yard and have animals it would be wise to do some personal research!

I believe that if you pick and prepare your own medicinal’s and remedies  yourself the result is that your body can digest it better than a product that has gone through a process touched by many hands.  It is also fresher and right from the source without any preservatives.   The tea tastes great and research suggests that your body only takes the amount of silica it needs and eliminates the excess amount just like it does for Vitamin C!

Since discovering the benefits of bamboo tea I have enjoyed drinking a cup a day and explored it as an infusion in my bath and for my hair!  Loving it…….my hair has a shine I haven’t seen in a while!

Relationships Matter: ‘Couples Intimacy ‘

“If there are problems in the bedroom, there’s conflict!”

“If there are problems in the relationship there are problems in the bedroom!”

These are two comments I made at our 3rd Removing Obstacles to Love workshop last night!  Our conversation was focused on the aspects of our primary relationships.  Breaking it down into bite sized pieces, so to speak,  there are four areas of focus in our primary relationships that affect each other.  They are:

  1. Family/Community/Social Network
  2. Household Health/Financial
  3. Relationship (Interaction & Behavior)
  4. Intimacy

Our consideration was on the dynamics of unresolved issues and  how some people can compartmentalized their relationship issues and still be intimate while others need to have resolution on outstanding issues to have their needs for safety met to be vulnerable enough for intimacy!

Where are you in this topic?  Do you need the resolution of your unresolved issues with your partner to be as intimate as you like?

In this scenario, I suggested that if couples are open and honest with each other and they speak up about what is important to them in the moment that this present connection could lead them to intimacy.  Why?  It is the connection that is important, not the issues.  Any unresolved issues is about not be seen, not being heard and not being valued!  My recommendations are to slow down and listen.  Learn to listen to your partners soul and your own!

I have to share this!!!

Yesterday at my Awareness through Movement® class on Balance a participant mentioned that when she went to her Doctor, his solution for her was to say,   “Just, stop falling!”

“Visitor from hell came to stay”

“Wild cat” to ‘loving cat’!

Last summer my son and his cat came to stay for a time.  At the end of two weeks I stood in the living room looking at this cat beast and told myself she had to go. I noticed that I was afraid and anxious around her.  She acted tough and responded like a feral cat.  Her tail was stiff and unyielding if you brushed into it and she immediately took up living space.  She was not friendly or loving.  She scratched people, furniture and rugs.

Another voice spoke up suggesting I put my training to good use and do what I would do for my clients and students followed by a question, “What if I  accepted  and empathized with her, and loved her just as she was?”  So I told myself, “okay, what if I begin to meet her needs?” So I did. I began to give her my focus of attention.  I spent time with her when she started to scratch at the couch.  If she went to her food dish, I gave her food.  If she wanted to go outside, I took her out.  I began to take her for walks and play with her.  I didn’t let her overnight alone as she would become crazy by herself in the dark.   She became one of my priorities in my daily schedule and a lifestyle consideration.

As her basic needs were met and she started getting a lot more attention she began to thrive.  After about two weeks she would come and lay on the back of the couch and stare directly into my eyes.  I wondered if she was checking in to sense if she was safe enough with me to left her guard down.  Soon she began to settle and start behaving more friendly and was calmer.  Over time she stopped behaving wild.  Some qualities of her wildness reappears if her needs and schedule aren’t kept.

Her personality has completely shifted and new wonderful characteristics are emerging daily.  I am in awe of her and now understand how people can enjoy and love cats.  I didn’t know I could enjoy them as well.  This one has opened my heart wide open! With her in my life these past months I have noticed my ease to show my loving nature is growing and that my need to be protective is diminishing.  She has brought these two qualities to my attention for which I am grateful!

What I have learned from this little one is that the environment and relationships that we have with other people can be translated to our pets.  Our pets respond to the same value needs as we do even without spoken words!  That communication is the quality of our responsive behavior more than our spoken words.

Understanding how to bridge the divide between interpersonal intelligence and right fighting (and find self esteem in the process)!

pic by Renee Lindstrom

This heart was created spontaneously when I shifted my focus of attention towards my upcoming 2017 communication workshops.  One of my first steps in starting classes in a new year for Think Speak Act and Removing Obstacles to Love (both based on Nonviolent Communication) is to stop and check in to sense inwardly my connection to where I am at and what focus is important to draw the learners attention to. Being  equally dominate kinesthetically and visually, this check in involves sensations (feelings) and images that then go through a process to become a teaching language.  Unlike traditional styles of teaching that have an inflexible structure that restricts the spontaneity a tactile or visual learner needs, the intention of these workshops is to create more balance and understanding between old school doctrine and new age agility training.

Not experiencing education that accommodated my style of learning, finding Dr. Marshal Rosenberg was a huge gift for me to overcome the obstacles of disconnection.  I longed for a bridge to enable me to be who I was on the inside with others in the world I lived in who processed in a mindset of right and wrong.  The difference for me between those with tactile and visual sensibilities and those of a right and wrong thinker is interpersonal intelligence. This is ones ability for effective verbal and nonverbal communication and to note distinctions among others, to have sensitivity to the moods and temperaments of others, and the ability to entertain multiple perspectives.

Thankfully, I discovered this way of communicating as I had children who have my learning styles!

Typically in the past this heart may have had shades of  grey, however, as this practice deepens it is becoming more expressive and vibrant. I am discovering that to be an effective listener,  and to express with confidence and self-esteem that leads to honesty, it is best if one has a deep love for oneself .  Marshall has given me the practice tools to discover how all our differences are gifts to a relationship.  I hope you will join one of my upcoming classes to discover this within yourself!

New babies are borne to be loved in a way that is reflected back by their parents.  One expression of this is when they look into their parents eyes they see mirrored back to them the unconditional love they express in their own eyes when looking at their parents.  However, as we are fitting our life puzzle pieces together, life jostles us around and unconditional love may not be the expressions we see reflected back.  If one has not experienced it, they cannot mirror it.  This form of communication can support you to explore and experience this within yourself.  It will empower you to begin to mirror this back to others in a safe way that is appropriate for the circumstances.  If you have a child you may be more open and vulnerable that with a shop keeper!  If you have a lover you may be more intimate than with your boss or fellow employee.  It is a wonderful skill to begin to have more clarity in all your relationships.  It begins with checking in first to connect to your intention followed by skill development.
