Your focus is where your attention goes…….

Your focus stimulates your connection physically, ethereally, perceptually, emotionally, mentally and ultimately your connection and contribution to life, environment and planet.

One of the physical areas that is a hit right now in my Feldenkrais work isย  eye focus.ย  It seems that those spending time using Zoom have been getting coaching on how to appear through facial expression and eye contact.ย  It seems that the focus has gone from full body expression to facial with this current medium for staying in touch!

This leads to a question for consideration.ย  Do you focus on the world and take aim with your eyes or do you let the world come to you?ย  If you had to guess, which action would be intense and which action would be soft?

What I am hearing as a need from those on the receiving end of a Zoom connection is for empathy expressions.ย  Those who haven’t accomplished slowing down and softening their eyes are unable to mask their lack of empathy over Zoom.

If you would be interested in discovering more about ways to cultivate this skill through simple micro-moves connect and arrange a Zoomย  session.ย  ย This is not a trend for healing yourself or others, it is simply increasing your functional facial expressions that increases your accessibility.

Shoes for increasing body balance

by Renee Lindstrom, GCFP @ Inside Awareness,ย Living in Natures Love Blogย &ย Renee Lindstrom Live

Natural Foot Motion each of us was borne with.ย  Without it one is less likely to have balance.

For 13 years I have been asked aboutย what shoes I would recommend by clients and students in my Feldenkraisยฎ Private Movement Practice and Awareness through Movement Classes. Shoes are a very personal decision and one must be comfortable with the design, style, fit and personal concepts of what will give them the best support.

An opportunity to work more closely with foot pain led to some postural patterns becoming obvious. Postural patterns that seemed to be created by the insoles in ones shoes. Insoles that hold the foot in one place with no natural shift of weight through the foot from back to front, front to back and side to side. This surprising awareness was enough to break a 13 year pattern of not getting into shoe talk and the start of taking a deeper look.

This pair of Adidas will explain one of the reasons I have not recommended shoes in the past. It goes against the past few decades of advertising and marketing that has been somewhat misleading.ย  Yet these are quite possibly the most comfortable shoes I have ever slipped on. These are wide enough to let ones toes move and the uppers are soft without any weight, seams or tight bands or pressure. It has a sock fit construction with pull tongue and heel making it easy to slip on and off.ย  The insoles are a soft foam with no rises, valleys or dips letting the weight move through the feet and toes curl to create natural arches. This design lets one have a more natural gait.ย  The only aspect of this shoe that I have reservations on is the slight incline of the heel, however smaller concern than I have for other styles.

Why recommend they type of shoe?ย

“Flexible Body, Flexible Mind”ย  ย Moshe Feldenkrais

I am going to recommend this type of shoe as they are weightless.ย  When wearing them the focus is not on lifting the shoe in the same way as the more familiar styles of shoes.ย  This will increase the potential of increasing the movement of the foot and ankle versus the effort of lifting a heavier shoe.ย  Ideally one would not lift their foot from the floor or ground to take a step.ย  Insteadย  they would use the ground to push-off from that comes fromย  a shift of weight through their foot to create a pattern of movement moving up the up leg.ย  This shoe design has the potential to allow one to have freer movement through the bone structure in the feet.ย  The sock fit of the shoe eliminates the distraction of laces and weight at the top of ones foot allowing more felt sense awareness of how ones foot is moving.ย  My experience of this shoe is the one can begin to cultivate awareness of their feet in motion versus loosing a connection to them in heavier more confined shoes.

The Influence of Posture

Intouch with Empathy and the Brain: Amygdale, Hippocampus, Prefrontal Cortex

Amygdalus – Implicit Memory:

  • present at birth
  • includes emotional, behavioral, perceptual and possibly body memory
  • no sense of recollection (time) present when memories recalled
  • conscious attention is not required for encoding
  • does not involve the hippo-campus

Hippo-campus – Explicit Memory:

  • requires conscious attention
  • includes semantic(factual) and episodic(autobiographical) memory
  • develops during the second year of life and beyond
  • sense of recollection present when recalled
  • if autobiographical, a sense of self and time and present
  • if autobiographical, also involves the prefrontal cortex

Prefrontal Cortex

  • regulation of body systems
  • attuning to others
  • balancing emotions
  • modulating fear
  • responding flexibly
  • exhibiting insight and empathy
  • paying attention to the body’s wisdom
  • morality

When we are triggered beyond our window of tolerance our pre-frontal cortex function stops and we are left in responses of fight or flight.ย  If our reactions shifts into freeze, our brain response has moved from the area of the amygdala and into the hippo-campus with no sense of time and into helplessness.

I have come to understand empathyย is an effective tool to balance out the responses of hippo-campus and amygdala.ย  Empathy allows one to recover andย  calms ones prefrontal cortex.ย  As empathy develops it increases connections back and forth between our right and left brains therefore increasing ones windows of tolerance. ย I have also heard that empathy may have a direct link in the amygdala’s ability to accelerate the vagusย nerve.

This goes beyond simply a reaction and includes the activation of ourย  parasympathetic system through the vagus nerve.ย  See diagram below to get an idea of the areas that become aroused as when we are stimulated.

These reactions includes our motor control. ย As we surpass our window of tolerance we begin to lose our fine motor control.ย  We begin to lose our ability for tracking,ย  to focus and mind-fully integrate. This involves our ability for self connection, to feel safe, grounded and to be present in the now.

There are ย theories to suggest the Amygdala is the accelerator through the 3 channels of the vagus nerve that controls our fight, flight and freeze experience and the quickest tool to connect to the Amygdala is through empathy.
