Prevention thru Good Digestion

A few weeks ago I pulled out Eating Alive, Prevention thru good Digestion by Dr. Jonn Matsen, N.D., to get the correct spelling for a student.  I had been stressing to them  it was  important to create good eating habits for building a relationship between function and food.  For me it is more important than increasing the information overload of facts and ideas.   I experience one as experiential learning and the other is upon words and ideas.  One is easily integratable, calming and creates new habits while the other creates overwhelm and increases rules, blocks and moral judgements.  One is physical and the other mental focused.

What I love about this book, Eating Alive, is the Author is from my own Province of B.C.  It was suggested to me in the 80’s by a Naturopath in Prince George,    whose opinion at that time was my estrogen level was too high.  I had gone to this Doctor for something completely different and his first diagnosis was based on my appearance and energy.  I worked in an executive hotel and wore heels, makeup and cute outfits with scarves.  My hair and nails were done every few days which I believe added to the image of too much estrogen.  He was dressed in Trekking clothes with Birkenstocks and went white water rafting every weekend.  What he didn’t know or couldn’t have known was I had just gotten out of a long term relationship that had been draining and was enlivened by some of the best sex I have experienced in a new, younger relationship.  Since then I have come to consider how connections in relationships can interact with our hormone levels.  At that time I was living it!

Regardless, I followed his advice and tried Dr. Matsens program.  Looking back I am pleased I did as it has given me an experiential reference point that is different than the current trends and  emotional reactions to this overload of information.

This program gave me back my food responsibility and choices to experience  empowerment or disempowerment.  It provided the shift of perspective that   cultivated awareness of how to focus attention on the reactions to what I ate.  I  no longer tell myself stories about my diet or seek outside solutions.  It’s all about getting out of the head and focusing on inner experiences and taking action.  There is no quick cure or answer.

It’ requires an inner shift of commitment to take the effort to do the work to create the landscape that is needed to come into alignment with physical function and choice.  There is no pill or outside solution.  Change is the only way for new healthy habits to form.

Now in others I can experience their reactions when staying in the mental quest of looking outside of themselves for answers and solutions.   The information overload seems adds fuel to their emotions  that is reactionary keeping them from making any concrete changes.  I am grateful to have had this grounding educational experience which taught me how to focus my attention on the somatic experience that supported me to become my own best expert.

What would I say to the Naturopath that assessed me as having too much estrogen if it happened now.  I would say back to him, let me enjoy my femininity and request he check in first before making an assessment based upon his filters.  His perspective dimmed the feelings of inner aliveness through his choice of language and lack of listening.  Over the years I have discovered he was a false authority.

Past equals present, present equals future

In the land of right and wrong there is only the separating experience of right and wrong.

If one longs for connection, right and wrong isn’t important.

Your motivation for connection is what is important.

The skill: to move beyond reaction to pause and explore your intention.

I was reminded of how sympathy can influence not being seen or heard

For me it is an experience of one merging their pain with an others.

Going into sympathy reflects merging old pain together with an others circumstances.

Let me explain.

In a circle with Dr. Marshall Rosenberg in 2004, he began demonstrating a deepened empathy pattern and I found myself curious about how some of us in the circle were independently holding the space and others where crying in sorrow.  I asked an advanced trainer who had worked with Dr. Rosenberg for many years about the differences in experience.  I was told that those who were not sobbing  didn’t have a similar pain as the person who was receiving empathy.  Those who were  had that same abuse in their lifetime that stimulated old pain.   Fortunately this intensive was to transition from moral judgments and right and wrong thinking.  This explanation was shared with clarity and as a matter of fact.  What I learned was that those identifying with the pain had an opportunity to heal themselves in witnessing the resolution in the person who was receiving empathy from Dr. Rosenberg.  The key was to feel their pain rise up and let their thoughts rest.  The skill was to resist  going into their own story that would hijack the circumstances away from the speaker.  I call this the ultimate witnessing ability.  (This is when you can stop yourself from hijacking someones story away from them and making it about you.)

Empathy practice, the NVC way, is to fully hear what someone is saying without interpreting it back through your past experiences and personal perspectives.  The only way someone is going to feel seen and heard is if you are able to listen to their words while being attentive to what you are hearing.  The following ways of habitually listening are not empathetic, instead they challenge the speaker.

  • Comparisons – telling your perspective or someone elses
  • Being an authority
  • Moral Judgments – no right and wrong, not speaking to what’s wrong with someone
  • Assessments
  • Diagnosis
  • Labeling
  • Criticizing
  • Coming up with solutions
  • Asking questions – your job is to listen, not understand

Moon Influence:  Gratitude, Sharing, Enthusiasm

Currently the moon is in it’s waning cycle.  A great time for finishing up projects and clearing clutter.  Not a great time for new projects.  It will be diminishing until the next new moon.

For goal setting this phase of the moon is it’s Disseminating phase.  This is a time to share your goals with others and ask them to celebrate you and your intentions.  In this case needs that your are meeting for yourself.

Full Moon in Sagittarius at 12:12 pm – June 5th

  • Life Area governed by Sagittarius:

Education, Growth

  • Body Parts governed by Sagittarius:
Hips, Thighs, Pelvis, Arteries

As the moon journeys through Sagittarius it’s energy reflects taking risks on instinct.  This is the sign of many visionary pioneers.  Sag is a mutable fire sign that generates  a comfortableness (mutability)  with change (fire).

This full moon’s traditional name is strawberry moon and it takes place during a Lunar eclipse.  Many are predicting a time of radical change as the moon experiences it’s shadow side while travelling through the Earth’s shadow.

Today is a power day for intentions.  It has the strongest energy for aligning with the change you are seeking.  Today’s full moon is a milestone for the goals you have been considering since the last new moon whether consciously or unconsciously.  Did you know all your thoughts, hope and dreams are actions of intentions regardless of being self-empowering or self-depreciating?

What have you been thinking and hoping for these past days?
