Renee Lindstrom participates in Educational Project starting in 2013 to present: World Children’s Summit on Peace & Nature

Photo’s compliments of Lee-Anne Erickson

Renee Lindstrom became the  Vice Chair of the The World Children’s Summit on Peace and Nature in February, 2014.  However her participation began in the fall of 2013 when she was invited to sit on the board and lead the contemplative workshop.   While Vice-Chair her focus was on creating a model for connecting to nature using the arts; photography, music & storytelling and contemplation; body, mindfulness & meaning. This involved organizing the lofty ideas and vision and introducing it to the community.

The Contemplative Workshop itself is new to education and a great opportunity for Renee to create a unique and innovative educational experience.  She   integrated somatic movement, universal values & leadership. The experience demonstrated a way to easily develop skills in understanding values, feelings, inner connection and acceptance of differences. This workshop was not only educational showed how the benefits of contemplation could be integrated with the purpose of focusing upon compassionate leadership.

As a sponsor of the World Children’s Summit Renee Lindstrom developed a Calendar of values  and monthly activities for educators to take part from anywhere in the world!  She created a template from the Kids Peace Bus Calendar of Values Program .  Part of the workshop included a class dialogue about universal values.  The children created their own class values simply by answering the question, “What is important to you in your classroom?”

The World Children’s Summit on Peace and Nature became a relevant event held in a local school  that was more than the events themselves.  It was a whole program that held a container for a focus of peace.  The founder of the Summit brought in a Peace Fountain and Peace Pole as a focus and the participating classes ended the day gathering together to share their individual experiences.

IN THE COMMUNITY: Peace Themed Events in Victoria during celebrations of #Peace Day

For one week in September, Greater Victoria Celebrates the United Nations International Day of Peace.  It begins with a community calendar of events where by groups can share their peace themed events in the days leading up to it and just after it!  This includes events sponsored and/or hosted by Renee of Inside Awareness.  We are pleased that this year, 2015, revolved around the Labyrinth.

Beginning Saturday, September 13 – #yyj Peace Week was kicked off with the  2nd Annual Puppets for Peace Parade.  An event created by local Tim Gosley.  During the month of August Tim had a display in the Bay Centre and held various workshops in our community.   Tim had invited yyjpeace.com to hang the Ambassador of Peace Exhibit at the Little Fernwood Art Gallery in the weeks leading up to the parade.  We now say good-bye to this Peace Pal International Exhibit of children’s art from 86 different countries!

On Wednesday, September 16th two Greater Victoria Community’s proclaimed this Labyrinth Friendship Day.  In Victoria this was the 3rd year to do so and in Central Saanich it was their first!   It began Wednesday afternoon in Central Saanich at Woodwynn Farms Peace Garden with Dr. Saul Arbess, Founder of the Canadian Peace Initiative reading Mayor Ryan Windsors Proclamation.  It continued with a personal quiet walk at Cadboro Bay United Churches beautiful hardwood floor labyrinth  and finally to an evening celebration in dedication of  Irving Park Labyrinth that was  hosted by the Church of Truth, Community of Conscious Living.

On Sunday, September 20th for our first year we held a challenge to build a Community Giving Labyrinth!  This challenge was to build a labyrinth with a donation of  1,000 food cans!  Permission was granted and we partnered with the Mustard Seed!  We donated 510 pounds of food to the Mustards’ Seed 100,000 pound and 100,000 dollar challenge that runs until the end of October.  It is their 2nd annual pie off challenge!

On Monday, September 21st the day was dedicated to children!  Beginning with a Labyrinth  Peace Walk at the Greater Victoria Public Library Central Branch to start our local World Peace Day celebrations!  This continued with an evening celebration of International Day of Peace hosted by the World Children’s Summit on Peace and Nature!   The World’s Children Summit celebrated  Brentwood Bay Elementary’s spring participation in a one day event featuring four workshops. They were on Nature and Photography, Storytelling, Music and Contemplation!  The evening also celebrated local Victoria peace elder, ‘Louise Taylor!’  Louise has been an inspiration and has continuously put effort into creating peace wherever her steps have lead her.  She has brought back world connections into the Greater Victoria Region.  She is the steward of a space dear to many, the CorUnum Centre.

WALKING THROUGH THE WEST – Seeds of Intention for 2016

Seeds of Intention for 2016

~ Part 1 of 3 ~

medicine-wheel-north, south, east & west

  • Planting seeds of intention for 2016

The Fall Equinox shifts us into Natures cycle reflecting  Personal Change.   Entering into the West is the best time to plant the seeds of intention for the coming year ~ 2016 ~.

This is the time to check in and reflect on what has and hasn’t worked in this past year and letting go of life’s clutter.

A time of inner thanksgiving and harvesting.

In this three part series you will explore how to clear inner space to make room for new growth using intention so that you are filling your experience up with what you do want.  NOT with what you don’t want!    Each weekend will include guided mediation and fun activities to combine mindful contemplation, with movement and creativity.  Become introspective in a fun light-hearted way without dogma and the heaviness of effort.  Rather begin to discover how to reduce the effort of living!  Made even easier with Natures guidance…..

Breaking our 2016th year into three parts we will explore our nine life areas, hopes and dreams and begin to co-ordinate them within the cycles of Nature, as follows.

Autumn – West  – Introspection

Winter – North – Clarity

Spring – East – Awareness

Summer – South – Heartfelt Action

Enjoy exploring how to create a better tomorrow that begins with expanding awareness in the support of the natural rhythms of nature.

Sept 23rd — Candlelight Labyrinth Walk at the Irving Park Labyrinth to celebrate the Fall Equinox

James Bay Morning Labyrinth Walk

A community candlelight labyrinth walk at Irving Park Labyrinth Pathway to harmonize with the fall equinox.  A beautiful balance of walking with an inward focus to connect with self and the element with others holding the same purpose!

Special addition to Sept 16th event:

Betsy Nuse and Louise Taylor will be joining us at Irving Park Sept 13rd:  Inspired by a global call to join hands for peace with other circles in Europe, Australia and South America, Louise and Betsy will align our energies with the labyrinth and trees of Irving Park. We will move with one another in a variety of simple community dances. Bring only your openness to cultivating both inner and outer peace – no dance experience and no partners are required.
*** Irving Park is located at the corners of Menzies and Michigan Streets in James Bay.   Hidden amongst magnificent old trees and beautiful Japanese plum trees on the far side of the park is a labyrinth made of flat stones sunk into the grass, hardly visible until you’re on top of it.

Sept 27th —  Life of Balance, Nature as the Guide to Living   Nature in balance creates harmony and gifts all life with what they need for a happy life.  Nature out of balance takes back its gifts and destroys life.  Can exploring the metaphors of Nature guide us in our developing consciousness and take us back into living life in more harmony and balance with each other and our natural surroundings.  As a labyrinth reflects an ancient natural form of going inward to find a connection to return differently lets continue the journey to exploring our nature characters and how to be more understanding in relationships using the virtues reflected in nature.

Peace Pal International Children’s Ambassador of Peace Art Exhibit

On Display at Little Fernwood Art Gallery,    Fernwood Avenue until Sept 13, ’15,  in conjunction with Puppets for Peace Celebration  – located at Bay Centre 3rd Floor!

Excited to set this up with local artist Kristi Bridgeman this past week.  Kristi’s arrangement of art work is expressive and designed to have the appearance of prayer flags!

Pathway Project @ #yyj’s Spring Ridge Commons

Spring Ridge is Canada`s oldest public food forest and Victoria’s largest public permaculture garden or community multi-layer food forest , located on a 1/2 acre city lot in Fernwood at the corner of Chambers and Gladstone. (Location Address is 1200 Gladstone Avenue. )

@insideawareness Summer Volunteer Focus, ’15

This summer Renee Lindstrom of @insideawareness spent time with a Coordinator of Spring Ridge Commons, in conversation about a focus for enhancing the community garden experience.  Through our discussions we began to  differentiate philosophy and practicality.  Both important influences upon each other, yet,  which comes first?  We decided to focus upon practicality and bring a change from the ground up!

After hosting  a clearing ceremony to voice the qualities community members would like to enhance in the garden,  we followed this up with creating some  new pathways.  The first pathway we started with was one that had become a shortcut through the gardens.  Our purpose was to change the superhighway experience this pathway had become.  Instead we created meandering garden pathways by adding curves to redirect walkers. This would slow people down and take them on another pathway through the garden and offer them choices.  In the process of changing this pathway an unexpected feature became a welcome focal point.  A plaque!

In creating these pathways the focus of attention was on:

  • the pathway as the experience
  • rock edging to define the pathway

Our next pathway challenge will be the front entrance pathways!  The challenge is the designated front entrance is diminished by other entrances to the gardens!  Watch for pics!
