Comparisons & Restorative Justice, really? Our habits make us lazy.

After tearing down a contemplative installation that was Inside’s contribution in a shared event,  I ran in to view the remaining presentations.  I viewed a role-play on a topic that  I loved and seeing the participants respond was fun.   So it was with dismay and a difference in opinion when I heard the next presenters come up and compare their presentation to the one before it!  I ask myself, why? Are you in the habit of comparing yourself to others?  Is so, is there always a winner and a loser? comparison

The first sentence I heard in the presentation expressed was, ”  ..(blank) …..used the old school method while I am using the new method of presenting with audio visual and a bullet form presentation to follow along!  She did not open with an indicator to us that this was only her belief and that she wasn’t speaking for us all.  She stated it like it the truth, which to me,  meant she knew more than anyone else in the audience without realizing she was comparing two totally different teaching methods that cannot be compared in this way.  Hers was exclusive of audience participation and the style was speaking at us with words on a screen while the other method included the audiences participation and the learning was experiential.  It was presented though an exercise therefore included more than the senses of seeing and hearing.

In this one sentence she compared herself to the presenter before in a way that told us she was more effective.  One was old and one was new.  This may have not been her intent, yet I believe it demonstrates her lack of wisdom while commanding a hierarchical status quo.  I believe her intent was to apologize for using this form of audio visual and rather than explaining what need of hers she was not meeting, she chose to make it about the person before her.

This is a perfect demonstration of a non-physical form of violence that begins inside as comparison and is expressed in a language of violence.  The root source that results in the need for restorative justice.   It is my perspective that there is no comparison between the sharing styles or techniques.  One is a speaking systems designed for  behavior awareness that reduces the need for the restorative action to meet ones need for justice.

My discomfort continued to grow with the use of labels such a perpetrators, victims,  and so on and I found my mind wandering back to a belief that is expanding.   It is based upon being courageous and having the willingness to speak with honesty and with acceptance together with *understanding there are differences in opinions.   This belief is a growing understanding that our habits are lazy.  It is easier for us to protect ourselves from feeling the discomfort that comes when speaking our truth and sharing a common value.  Our immediate choice is to stay in a mental dominated state of analyzing, labeling and talking at issues with a language of solutions.  We are choosing not to take the extra effort to *process them by checking in first to identify a personal value connection first before going to solutions.  The process we are ignoring becomes the effort and life draining experience and the need behind restorative justice.

*Understanding differences in opinions:  This is knowing that your opinion is not what others believe to be true.  It is a skill to be able to hear others and know that this does not mean you have to agree or disagree with them.

.

*Dealing with issues:  We are not expressing ourselves in a simple, concise way in the moment while pausing long enough to check in with others to confirm how they are hearing us.  This simple skill seems to be a frightening option for many and they will withhold.  The outcome is not being recognized.  That is if this time and step is not taken it is exactly what leads us into resentment and life draining relationships.  It become the source of our need for restorative justice!

A ‘vision’ comes alive!

An indoor medicine Wheel @ the Church of Truth – Oct 8th ’14

Walking Maps of Consciousness

This month Renee Lindstrom,  of Inside,  was invited to present and feature the topic of ‘contemplation practice’ at the Church of Truth in Victoria, B.C.  She decided to explore two maps of consciousness for learning and growth in one’s inner and outer worlds. These two maps of consciousness are the *Labyrinth and the *Medicine Wheel.     The month began with sharing a labyrinth walk by candlelight in a local Victoria park on the eve of the anniversary of Gandhi’s birthday, October 1st.  This date is also recognized internationally as the        “Day of Nonviolence.”

The community group hosting these events, The Church of Truth, had shared weekly evening walks on this labyrinth all summer.  By doing so they have begun to develop a heart-felt connection to the land and deepened this among themselves.  They shared their own wisdom, healing and conscious awareness techniques throughout the summer while walking this ancient pathway.

The evening focus of October 1st was to open the month as a “gateway” to explore a personal deepening awareness while experiencing *sacred space.  The purpose was to experience this ancient pathway and it’s sacredness and in doing so, integrate the inner body wisdom this map reflects.  Each workshop this month will continue to be a multi-layered learning experience for deepening one’s connection to inner wisdom.  Each workshop has its own learning benefits and can be experienced separately or together.

A planetary need is for all human kind to connect to and grasp a “point of consciousness” in our daily practice.  A point of consciousness that is our recognition and understanding of the full circle of life, that which has all things.”

A learning point that Renee introduced Oct 1st was this circle with a cross in the center.  The cross represents the four directions.  This circle in the drawing below was drawn to represent the Map of the Medicine Wheel.  Yet on October 1st it was introduced as the Map of Body Balance.  Yes the body has four directions: north, south, east and west.  It is circular and is three-dimensional, not two.  The invisible lines of the cross in the body represent balance from side to side and front to back.

Explore your balance!  Stand with your feet together.  Shift your weight from side to side a few times.  Shift your weight forward and back a few times.  Each time you shift your weight you are crossing your center (plum) line.  Each time you take a step in walking you are crossing both lines)  Imagine walking a map that represents this inherent body pattern?

*Labyrinth:   The Labyrinth was adopted by North and South American from the European Continents.

.

*Medicine Wheel:  The Medicine Wheel has been adopted here along the West Coast of B.C. from the Plains of North America.

.

*Scared Space:  Sacred space is an experience created by one’s inner connection that is reflected in one’s outer nature and the their environment.  It is the ability to experience a particular connection to; oneself,  what is above, what is below and around oneself in the landscape.  This connection includes reverence and honor.  It represents balance within oneself of the physical (north, south, east & west), mental (masculine), emotional (feminine) and belief systems (values, devotion).

.

Renee Lindstrom spent the 90’s exploring and training in the arts of sacred space and landscape.  In the mid-nineties she had her own consulting and teaching practice that included creating sacred space in environments (indoors & outdoors) and in relationships with oneself.  This was in part the incentive to delve deeper into human nature (Feldenkrais Method Training & Language of Compassion.

‘Values in the work space’ – Improve communication in business

Integrating values in the work space and learning a values spoken language brings immediate results.  This system of learning has proven it will save time and money in the long run.  It will cut unproductive time spent to justify ones actions to prove who is right or wrong and replace water cooler gossip, that creates enemies,  with skills to speak up effectively in the moment. The roots of  discontent always comes back to misinterpretation of information at the time of any circumstance and the lack of skills to inquire for more information before drawing conclusions.  Without this there is only one unethical behavior option, reaction!

This business model continues to prove to me that it develops trust and safety for being honest and being heard.  What I am witnessing is a model of personal mediation that reflects courage for speaking ones truth in the moment and with ease!  Breaking through an old school concept of not being outspoken to be nice is replaced with true kindness to the organization.

In these long-term business integration sessions that have following introductory workshops,  I get to witness the participants breaking through the barriers of  those who ‘think they know everything,” and those ‘who never speak up.’  Those who think they know go beyond this self-induced wall of limited thinking and those who never speak up begin to make their presence known.  The result is more connection and less resentment.  Those who preach and tell stories are doing less of this and those who quietly listen to the stories and preaching to be ‘kind’ are doing so less.  It is eliminating the resentment and freeing up time for productive action.

As a facilitator it is very rewarding to engage and observe this transition that becomes  ‘deepened mediation in the moment.’  This model can cut through frustration immediately and end lengthy meetings trying to resolve and process reactions.  When you think about it, restorative justice is focused upon reactions of those who did not know who to speak up for themselves in the moment to get the results they longed for!

Employers, bosses and employees:  why are you not all focused upon understanding why we are having reactions and being honest in the moment?   Why wait until being disciplined or sitting around a tribunal?  Radical!

Entering the Century of Dialogue

Universal Intention - accepting the challenges of today and taking action

Universal Intention – accepting the challenges of today and taking action

A historic event was unfolding over Peace Weekend, Sept 20 & 21 ’14. The Dali Lama gathered the 9 religion’s of India together to discuss secular ethics and the environment of the world!

The Dali Lama declared the this Century the Century of Peace and how to achieve it – a Century of Dialogue!

Renee of Inside  was inspired to create this image as she listened to the plenary sessions of this historic gathering. The leaders of the nine religions in India gathering together for a dialogue. What Renee heard from these leaders was in tune with her philosophy and life’s passion. Peace will only come through mindful dialogue. The three things she enjoyed hearing from these sessions was: 1. We are all the same. there is no difference between us. 2. We all need two things, grain and clean water. 3. If the water is polluted??????, If there is no grain??????

Inside perspective of  why does a century of peace depend upon a century of dialogue?

Peace comes from learning how to build a friendship based upon trust. Good friends are ones that have experienced you as trustworthy.  Bad friends are ones who have learned not to not trust you through experience. What determines trustworthy behavior?  Ethical behavior based upon shared values.

Values are universal and shared by all people.  We are  all the same and  we share the  same qualities of  human function.  These qualities are the four aspects of self;  mental, emotional, physical  and belief.  We all have the same needs for relationships,  survival and happiness and are entitled to achieve happiness in our life.  We are all entitled to relationships built upon respect and equality.

How can we create a culture of ethical behavior?  Through education, practice and commitment.  It begins with accepting the challenge and taking action.  It is only through personal change that one can be the change they want to see in the world.

A great starting point is learning a vocabulary of values.   Inside value programs are designed to start where you are and available for personal development, for the office, organization and education institution.  They are available for both adults and children.
