“Resolutions imply resolving conflict!” Did you start your year focusing on your inner conflicts?

The Beauty Path WayDid you begin your new year drawing attention to your inner conflict and what you hate about yourself?  If you did, what do you think your chances of success are when your focus is on what’s wrong with you versus what’s right with you?

Ever consider that you can put your failed resolutions down to the validation that you give yourself when you keep reconfirming in your mind what’s wrong with you.  Is your inner-voice telling you that you are a looser?

If you began to shift your focus slightly perhaps you will shift hopelessness into hope and inspiration.  Beginning with:

  • Asking yourself, “What is my motivation?”
  • and “Do I want  to build my confidence or self-sabotage?”

DAVID ZEMACH-BERSIN, Advanced Trainer of Feldenkrais® Method, on Balance and Fear of Falling

In Body and Mature Behavior, Moshe Feldenkrais draws brilliant parallels between the similarity of our reaction to the fear of falling, the withdrawal of an organism from a strong stimulus, and the body pattern of anxiety.

When we adapt or habituate to this neuromuscular and skeletal pattern, our involuntary nervous system becomes sympathetic dominant, creating a state of internal stress. In addition, there is a simultaneous inhibition of the anti-gravity muscles. This chronic muscular contraction, influences the sensation behind every movement, and creates a pervasive feeling of difficulty and effort. Our everyday ‘in the moment’ experience is effected; emotionally, psychically, physiologically and cognitively.

Integration of Body, Mind & Spatial Awareness

Portland, OR- January 9, 2007- The Feldenkrais Guild® of North America Makes an announcement about  Feldenkrais Method® Lessons and Lengthening Hamstrings.

In the Physical Therapy Journal (Volume 86, Number 12, December 2006)  a research study by Temple University Professor James Stephens, PT, PhD, CFP,  found that hamstring muscles can be lengthened using specific Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lessons without any stretching.

Previous studies have shown that the traditional approach to passive stretching to increase muscle flexibility does not produce long-term changes in the viscoelastic properties of muscle. In Dr. Stephens’ study, the experimental group engaging in the complex active movements of ATM lessons gained significantly more hamstring muscle length compared with the control group continuing normal activity. The study results suggest a wide range of applications of ATM for problems of flexibility and mobility. Further research is needed.

ATM lessons are typically experienced in a group atmosphere where a Feldenkrais practitioner verbally guides students through a series of slow, gentle movements. The method was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, D.Sc. (1904-1984), an engineer, physicist and martial arts expert. Currently there are over 1700 practitioners of the method in the United States and Canada.
